The main reasons why neodymium-iron-boron magnets dominate the magnetic materials industry are as follows:
Performance Advantages
Extremely Strong Magnetism: Neodymium-iron-boron magnets are currently the strongest permanent magnet materials in commercial applications and are known as the “King of Magnets.” Their magnetic energy product typically ranges from 200 to 400 kJ/m³, which is 5 to 12 times that of ferrite magnets and 3 to 10 times that of AlNiCo magnets; they can lift objects weighing up to 640 times their own weight.
High remanence and high coercivity: Remanence refers to the magnetic flux density retained by a magnet after the applied magnetic field is removed, while coercivity refers to the magnetic field strength required to magnetize the magnet under the influence of an applied magnetic field. Neodymium-iron-boron magnets possess high remanence and coercivity, making their magnetic properties more stable and less susceptible to interference from external magnetic fields or demagnetization.
High Operating Temperature: Standard neodymium-iron-boron magnets can operate at around 80°C, while specially treated high-temperature neodymium-iron-boron magnets can even operate at temperatures above 200°C.
Material and Cost Advantages
Relatively abundant raw materials: Iron, the primary raw material, is very inexpensive, and reserves of the rare earth element neodymium are 10–16 times greater than those of samarium. Compared to rare-earth magnets with equivalent performance, such as samarium-cobalt magnets, neodymium-iron-boron magnets have relatively lower raw material costs.
High Cost-Effectiveness: Although their raw materials include rare earth elements, which are relatively expensive, their superior magnetic properties allow for reduced material usage in many applications, thereby lowering overall costs.
Processing and Application Advantages
Good Mechanical Properties: They feature high hardness, high tensile strength, and good toughness, making them well-suited for use in various environments. They can withstand a certain degree of mechanical shock and vibration and are easy to cut, drill, and machine into complex shapes.
Diverse Shapes and Sizes: They can be easily manufactured into various shapes and sizes using processing methods such as pressing, extrusion, injection molding, and winding. Additionally, their magnetic properties can be adjusted by modifying the material formulation and heat treatment processes to meet the diverse needs of different industries.
Wide Range of Applications: Due to their excellent properties, neodymium-iron-boron magnets are widely used in numerous industries, including energy, transportation, machinery, healthcare, IT, and home appliances. In new energy vehicles, they serve as a key material for electric motors; in the medical field, they are used in magnetic resonance imaging (MRI) machines; and in electronic devices, such as cell phone vibration motors and headphones, they also find applications.
